I found this book thoroughly interested and informative. The discussion about Jewish life in Kurzeme (Courland/Kurland) was enjoyable. I learned a part of history that was not covered in my Latvian Saturday classes.
I would recommend this| |"Steimanis raises important questions about the survival of minorities in the nation-state." -- "Choice"|About the Author|Josifs Steimanis is professor of history at Daugavpils Pedagogical University in Latvia.

The Jewish community of Latvia lived at the crossroads of East and West and was the home of such distinguished people as Isaiah Berlin and Sergey Eisenstein. This book is a full history of the Jews of the region, from the first arrivals in the sixteenth century to the end of the twentieth, when the Holocaust and the second Soviet occupation resulted in the demise of the Jewish community in Latvia.
